Healthcare
Tools that support care teams, improve understanding, and help people navigate their health.
What we look for
Who was studied? What improved? Where does a clinician still need to make the decision?
The SI Upside
Human ingenuity. Practical progress.
A better future, together.
Technology matters most when it makes life better. We explore the people, ideas, and evidence behind the upside of intelligence.

Where the upside lives
From better care to a more accessible world, our starting question is always the same: who does this help?
Tools that support care teams, improve understanding, and help people navigate their health.
Who was studied? What improved? Where does a clinician still need to make the decision?
Technology that supports teachers and opens more ways for people to learn.
Does it help learners understand more? How are teachers involved? Who can access it?
New ways to investigate difficult questions and turn research into useful knowledge.
Was the result independently checked? Is it a research finding, a prototype, or a tool in use?
Practical ideas that strengthen connections and expand opportunities for people.
Who benefits locally? Who might be left out? Do the people affected have a say?
Smarter ways to understand our world, use resources, and work toward sustainability.
What is the measured impact? Does the assessment account for the technology's own resource use?
Tools that remove barriers and give more people the freedom to participate.
Were people with disabilities involved? What barriers are reduced? What still needs human support?

A new chapter
The AI Upside is now The SI Upside. The name reflects the evolving conversation around Super Intelligence and our belief in what people can accomplish with these tools.
The White House’s September 29, 2026 executive order directs the executive branch to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI,” to the extent permitted by law.
That shift prompted Doug to reconsider the publication’s name. “Artificial” can evoke imitation or a substitute for something real. “Super” carries a more hopeful association for him.
“I’m a big Superman and superhero fan. To me, ‘super’ brings to mind strength, optimism, and the possibility of doing something extraordinary. Think of a superpower that helps someone overcome a challenge, a superstar who inspires others, or an idea that supercharges what we can achieve. Even superhuman effort suggests reaching beyond our usual limits. Those associations make me feel good about the possibilities ahead.” — Doug Mehringer
That is the spirit behind The SI Upside: human ingenuity, technology that helps people, and a better future we can build together.
The order retains the existing statutory AI definition for its implementation. A new label alone does not establish greater capabilities. Our stories will continue to distinguish demonstrated results from promises.
